Mental wellbeing and expert advice for new parents

We carried out user testing to identify the content and support that new parents needed most, in order to design a streamlined and validated prototype with a unique and vital offering.

We carried out user testing to identify the content and support that new parents needed most, in order to design a streamlined and validated prototype with a unique and vital offering.

Situation

Ammi wanted to take the next step and create a digital therapeutic mental health app to support new parents.

Their mission is to empower new parents with information, support, and community. They do this via weekly online workshops around mental and physical health and infant development. But they wanted to offer more, through a new digital product / mental health platform.

They came to nuom with some preliminary user research conducted, lots of ideas, and the need to validate what content and structure would be most helpful to new parents.

Testing Objectives:

  • Validate which features are needed (and which are not)
  • Understand which content provides most value to users
  • Explore formats to establish which types work best
  • Determine information hierarchy (e.g. structured vs. freeform)
  • Identify how to make wellbeing tools most engaging

Solution

As a six-week project we worked to explore key features, design and prototype, and user test and refine, in order to create the most beneficial offering.

A key finding was that access to expert advice was of high appeal, and as such we decided to develop this further.

Other findings:

  • We found out how users wanted to engage with the product on a day-to-day basis.
  • Users liked elements of the solution that felt proactive and actionable in their lives.
  • Having the same structure for topics, in order to create a standardised information flow and user experience, worked best.

As part of the process we also carried out A/B testing, to test features and formats as a further way to validate ideas and test prototype iterations.

The visual design and graphics created tested well, offering users a calming feel, with illustrations and a butterfly brand motif resonating well.

As part of the design of this service we also added in expert specialisms, time zones, working hours, and how long it would typically take them to reply.

“A large part of this was about making tools as accessible as possible.”

We carried out user testing to identify the content and support that new parents needed most, in order to design a streamlined and validated prototype with a unique and vital offering.

Outcome

At the end of the process we created a final prototype that is now being used in a wider trial with target users, to seek feedback on specific video content, and to share with investors. This further feedback will then be incorporated into the final design and build of the app.

The client was looking to scale and add value to their idea, and through the design sprint process and user testing it was possible to clarify the best content, in formats that would suit the user.

The overarching value was to narrow down features and content ideas to what users needed, and design it in a way that works best for them in their circumstances as expectant and new parents. To validate the concept, model, structure, and formats, in order to create a platform that is needed, and that stands out from the crowd, thanks to the problems it solves.

“We really helped to streamline the product. To proactively remove unnecessary elements, to get to a version that has only what users need and want.”

Patricia Cervantes, Product Manager, nuom
